Meghan Beesley: January 2016

I have recently returned back from a warm weather training camp in Tenerife. I had a fantastic time. It is lovely to get away at this time of the year to get some sun and to be able to get some sessions completed in the heat. Training in the sun and the heat makes sprinting a lot easier for us and it has enabled me to do some longer hurdle sessions, such as a couple of 300m hurdles. In the past my times have been seconds slower at this time of the year, so the heat really does make a difference.

I have been to Tenerife in the past for a week or so to get a bit of sun but this year was different because my group came too and there were some other Loughborough athletes there too. My training was going that well out there it made me not want to come home. I had seen pictures of the snow at home and wasn’t looking forward to coming back to the snow.

I shared with Jess Turner, another 400m hurdler, we had a good giggle before and after training about things. I live on my own in Loughborough so it was nice to get home and have someone to talk to. I think she thought I was a little crazy dancing around the room a lot of the time in the day but I was happy that it was sunny. Although I always do miss my cat Mitsy when I go away but I have great baby sitters that look after her and take photos of her when I am away.

I am starting back doing sports for school events now that Christmas is over and I am back. It is always great to get involved in PE within schools and hopefully inspire the children to get involved in sport, specifically athletics. I do love going into the schools, the other day they taught me some dance moves which is always good fun to learn.

I am back to training in Loughborough, it is a bit cold and I am now just looking forward to being able to compete indoors. I will be doing BUCS for Loughborough University and then I will be competing in Sheffield in the 400m.

Next month I will be going to Florida to train! I can not wait. I haven’t been there before so I just want to get into the sun and visit a new place! America is a great place to go and will give me the opportunity to start my season this year a little earlier than I would normally do in the past. The USA season starts earlier than the European one, plus the weather is a lot nicer earlier on which enables me to get some good competitive races in nice conditions.

Last week was Nike Women’s week, so I went down to London to do a speed session with some of the girls there. It was great to do and I love that others are encouraged to do speed sessions as I think this is an area which a lot of people don’t get to join in regularly.

Pool Lane Flowing Smoothly Again Thanks to UltraCrete

UltraCrete’s HAPAS approved manhole reinstatement system has been used to repair a troublesome manhole cover on a busy road in Bromborough in the Wirral.

Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council had been experiencing problems with a re-occurring failure from a particular manhole cover along Pool Lane. The road is heavily trafficked and the chamber required the support of a more durable installation system to help it withstand the flow.

UltraCrete’s HAPAS System was recommended as the solution. It consists of a range of high performance bedding mortars, backfill flowable concrete, cold lay asphalt and bitumen seal and tack coat spray that withstand extreme trafficking. These products have been approved for use by the British Board of Agrément and have undergone rigorous assessment to verify their capabilities.

Engineering Contractor Bam Nutall carried out the reinstatement using UltraCrete’s HAPAS approved Envirobed HA104®  bedding mortar to install the frame. It is a cementitious alternative to resin containing recycled glass and is ideal for use in heavily trafficked and wheel track locations. It exceeds HA104 requirements adopted by the Highways Agency, achieving a superior compressive strength of 53N/mm² and a tensile strength of 6.10N/mm² in just 3 hours!

UltraCrete’s QC10 F Rapid Set Flowable Concrete was used to backfill the frame. The product offers a fast strength gain of 20N/mm² after just 90 minutes and virtually eliminates voids. Its pourable consistency facilities a quick and easy application – great for areas with a tight time constraint.

The vertical edges and backfill concrete were then sprayed with UltraCrete’s SCJ seal and tack coat spray before Instant Road Repair cold lay asphalt (10mm grade) was applied as the surface finish. The cold joint sealer helps to promote bond between the asphalt and the surface as well as preventing water ingress which leads to road structural failure. Once compacted, HAPAS approved Instaband ECO thermoplastic overbanding was heat applied to the surface edges to seal them and prevent fretting.

18 months on, the cover has successfully withstood trafficking, with no signs of deterioration. Bam Nuttall commented ‘We’re very pleased with Ultracrete’s system, the cover is holding up well!’ They have consequently recommended UltraCrete products to other suppliers.

Instarmac takes on Gardiner Potholes and Wins

Instarmac Instant Road Repair has recently been used to repair potholes on the Gardiner Expressway in Canada. Located in front of the famous Rogers Stadium, home to the Blue Jays Baseball Team, and the CN Tower, the world’s tallest building for 34 years, the Gardiner Expressway is the main route in an out of downtown Toronto.

Toronto City had been looking for a pothole repair product that would outperform the current methods used after a number of failed installations – the previous repair lasting only 2 weeks.

The expressway regularly surpasses traffic volumes of over 110,000 each day, which meant the chosen pothole repair product would need to withstand heavy and constant trafficking and keep disruption to motorists as minimal as possible. After careful research, Toronto City trialled world renowned Instarmac Instant Road Repair for the repair. The trial was so successful that Instant Road Repair is now the chosen repair method for the Gardiner Expressway.

Instarmac Instant Road Repair was installed in December 2015 on West Bound FGGE Lane 3 at the Spadina Off Ramp in the travel portion of the right wheel rut with great success.

Instarmac Instant Road Repair is a first time permanent pothole repair which has been continuously developed over the past 35 years all around the world with excellent results. It is being been used on a daily basis in all climates, from the snow bound island of Hokkaido in Japan, to the tropical monsoon hit roads of Malaysia, in the freezing cold Scandinavian winters, the heat of the Namibian desert and the temperate climates of Europe.

There are many cold lay asphalt repair products available, but Instarmac backs up its technical claims! Strength is gained by compaction, becoming stronger the more traffic that travels over it, making it perfect for heavily trafficked roads, areas of vehicle turning and breaking eg. traffic lights and junctions. UltraCrete’s Instant Road Repair has been specially formulated to allow flexible movement within the road surface, ensuring a long-term durable repair.
Applied in 3 easy steps – clean, pour, compact- UltraCrete Instant Road Repair can be applied in all weathers including hot, wet and cold – it can even be used in freezing temperatures. This innovative material has been independently tested by the British Board of Agrément and is proven to be a quality, flexible and durable solution for first time instant and permanent pothole repairs.

Ultrascape Helps to Deliver World Class Transport Hub

Ultrascape’s BS 7533 compliant mortar paving system has played a major role in helping to transform one of the UK’s busiest train stations.

The long awaited redevelopment of Birmingham New Street (Grand Central) station has transformed what was previously a dark, overcrowded site with poor access for passengers, into a prestigious gateway to the UK’s second city. Highlights include more space and better facilities for passengers, brighter and clearer platforms, a stunning new station facade and a grand concourse enclosed by a light filled atrium.

Work was carried out by one of the UK’s premier concrete frame contractors, MPB Structures Ltd. It included reinstating existing station platforms as well as installing new structures, hardscaping around the station perimeter and the creation of Birmingham’s version of the ‘Spanish Steps.’ The paving was installed using Ultrascape’s BS 7533 compliant Pro-Bed HS fine bedding concrete, Flowpoint rapid setting grout and Pro-Prime slurry primer.

Construction was carried out in difficult circumstances as the station was fully operational throughout the project. It is the busiest interchange station in the UK with trains departing every 37 seconds and over 140,000 passengers passing through daily.

Ultrascape Flowpoint grout was ideal as its rapid setting properties enable areas to be open to foot traffic in just 1 hour, keeping downtime and disruption to a minimum. Simple to use, requiring only the addition of water on site, it is poured over the area and washed clean, filling all joints evenly, without staining.

Ultrascape Pro-Bed HS provided a perfect bound base for the pavers. It can be laid up to 75mm in one pass, with greater depths achievable using successive layers. The fast strength gain of Pro-Bed HS allows pedestrian areas to be trafficked in as little as 12 hours.

Ultrascape Pro-Prime was applied between the paving elements and bedding mortar. The addition of a slurry primer is essential to yield a bond strength compliant with BS 7533 and helps prevent costly failures.

Flowpoint and Pro-Bed HS are also available in ‘ECO’ which is ideal for use on schemes looking to achieve distinctive environmental performance in their work and recognition from the CEEQUAL award scheme.

Projects incorporating BS 7533 compliant materials benefit from a reduction in failures and considerable whole life cost savings. The materials have been independently and rigorously tested by UKAS accredited laboratories to assess their performance capabilities. This method removes the uncertainty of site batched mortars and offers a minimum construction life of 40 years.

The stunning new station opened its doors in September 2015 and has already become a destination in its own right. Ultrascape is proud to have been specified and involved in a project that has delivered a station fit for Britain’s second city.

Get it right first time and make Ultrascape’s BS 7533 Mortar Paving system your only choice.

UltraFloor Level IT Bond scores at Wembley Stadium

UltraFloor’s Level IT Bond the rapid drying, all purpose smoothing underlayment has been used to refurbish a prestigious hospitality suite at Wembley Stadium.

The project was secured by longstanding UltraFloor customer, Mighty Flooring who carried out the work in the 50m² suite over a three day period. Level IT Bond was applied onto a concrete substrate and overlaid with a wooden vinyl to create a elegant finish perfect for entertaining private guests during matches.
