UltraScape Helps to Deliver New Gateway to Wales’ Capital

UltraScape’s BS 7533 compliant mortar paving system is playing a major role in helping to transform Cardiff’s Central Square.

The £400 million regeneration of one million sq ft of new office, residential and leisure space around Cardiff Central Railway Station in the centre of the city is well underway, and will create 10,000 new jobs.

At the heart of the development is the new 150,000 sq ft BBC Wales headquarters which will be a huge investment boost for the city.  Civil Engineers, Horan Construction, have completed work outside one of the office buildings using UltraScape’s BS 7533 compliant Pro-Bed HS fine bedding concrete, Flowpoint rapid setting grout and Pro-Prime slurry primer. This included the installation of Chinese granite setts and the construction of steps leading up to the front entrance.

UltraScape’s BS 7533 compliant Flowpoint rapid set grout is simple to use, requiring only the addition of water on site, it is poured over the area and washed clean, filling all joints evenly, without staining.  This slurry method provides an easy method of grouting large areas, quickly. The material is particularly suitable for use on irregular joints and can accommodate widths between 5mm and 50mm and depths of up to 200mm in a single pass. It is fast and efficient to apply and can be opened to pedestrians in just 1 hour and vehicular traffic after only 4 hours, minimising disruption.

UltraScape Pro-Bed HS provided a perfect bound base for the setts. It can be laid up to 75mm in one pass, with greater depths achievable using successive layers. The fast strength gain of Pro-Bed HS allows pedestrian areas to be trafficked in as little as 12 hours. UltraScape Pro-Prime was applied between the paving elements and bedding mortar. The addition of a slurry primer is essential to yield a bond strength compliant with BS 7533 and helps prevent costly failures.

Projects incorporating BS 7533 compliant materials benefit from a reduction in failures and considerable whole life cost savings.  The materials have been independently and rigorously tested by UKAS accredited laboratories to assess their performance capabilities. This method removes the uncertainty of site batched mortars and offers a minimum construction life of 40 years.

Later phases of the project will include more commercial space and residential buildings as well as a new £11m integrated transport hub to replace Cardiff’s existing bus station. The redevelopment will transform the square into one of the most modern business developments in the UK.

Get it right first time and make UltraScape’s BS 7533 Mortar Paving system your only choice.

UltraScape Helps to Boost Boscombe

UltraScape’s BS 7533 mortar paving system has been used to rejuvenate a busy high street in Bournemouth as part of plans to redevelop Boscombe precinct.

The £1.2 million scheme will create a ‘shared space’ environment by redesigning pavement and road layout, improving street furniture as well as introducing cycle lanes and bus priority signals to open up the shopping area and encourage drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to use the area harmoniously.

Bournemouth Borough Council specified UltraScape’s BS 7533 compliant mortar paving system to install granite blocks and concrete slabs along Palmerston Road. The work was carried out by Building and Civil Engineering Company, P T Contractors Ltd with pedestrian access maintained at all times.

Ultrascape Flowpoint grout was ideal for this project as its rapid setting properties enable areas to be open to foot traffic in just 1 hour, keeping downtime and disruption to a minimum. Simple to use, requiring only the addition of water on site, it is poured over the area and washed clean, filling all joints evenly, without staining.

UltraScape Pro-Bed HS provided a perfect bound base for the paving elements. It can be laid up to 75mm in one pass, with greater depths achievable using successive layers. The fast strength gain of Pro-Bed HS allows pedestrian areas to be trafficked in as little as 12 hours. It was supplied in 1 tonne bulk bags, perfect for large pedestrianisation projects with the added benefit of vastly reducing mortar packaging waste.

‘We chose UltraScape materials because of the swift response given by their sales team upon initial enquiry and the site support provided during the project. The products performed well and we would certainly recommend them.’ P T Contractors Ltd.

To date, the redevelopment of Boscombe has already improved facilities for visitors travelling in and around the town, making it easier, safer and more attractive.

Mander centre web

UltraCrete Features in Multi-Million Pound Redevelopment.

UltraCrete’s  HF high flow precision grout has been used in the £30 million redevelopment of Wolverhampton’s  major shopping complex, the Mander Centre.

The refurbishment work, set to complete in October 2017, is one of the most significant private sector investments in the city for over 20 years. The remodelling of the centre will create 10 new large retail units to complement the anchor store, Debenhams and create 150 + new job opportunities.

Sub-contractor, Laidlaw Ltd, installed a number of balustrades in the centre’s internal atrium using UltraCrete’s HF. The edges of the existing concrete floor slabs were shuttered before UltraCrete’s HF grout was poured to create a completely flat surface to bolt the balustrade track down. The balustrades installed used 24.89mm laminated sentry glass which can withstand a 3kN loading.

UltraCrete’s HF complies with the Department of Transport specification 2601 and is suitable for the infill of voids from 10mm-100mm. It is ideal as a bridge bearing grout as well as for the securing of balustrades, stanchion plates, machine beds and parapet legs and achieves a compressive strength of 70N/mm². It can be pumped or poured and will not corrode or stain.

Nigel Higgins, Contracts Manager, Laidlaw Ltd commented, ‘UltraCrete’s HF was excellent and performed exactly as required.’

UltraCrete helps holiday makers take to the skies

A busy bus lane outside Liverpool John Lennon Airport has been reinstated by Highways Contractor Cambrianway using UltraCrete products.

Time was of the essence to reinstate several manhole covers on a heavily trafficked bus route directly outside John Lennon Airport.

Cambrianway selected materials from the UltraCrete range due to their rapid set times and strength gain.  The area had several covers which required breaking out and reinstating with new ironwork.

The frames were installed using UltraCrete’s HAPAS approved manhole reinstatement system, comprising a range of bedding mortars, backfill flowable concrete, cold lay asphalt and seal and tack coat spray. The system is ideal for the reinstatement of linear drainage, and ironwork in areas exposed to extreme trafficking.

Envirobed HA104 ® high performance bedding mortar was used to bed the frames. It is an environmentally friendly alternative to resin based materials and can be used in wet weather and in temperatures as low as 1°C, so no delays due to poor weather conditions.  Envirobed HA104 ® was selected as it achieves an impressive 51N/mm² compressive strength after 3 hours and can be open to traffic in 60 minutes which was crucial when used outside a busy airport.

The ironwork was backfilled with UltraCrete’s rapid setting flowable concrete QC10F.  It is fibre modified for added strength and achieves 20N/mm² after just 90 minutes. It is easy to mix and literally pours from the bucket facilitating speedy application.  UltraCrete’s  Instant Road Repair 10mm was used as the surface finish, which can be opened to traffic immediately once compacted.

John Gallager from Cambrianway was very happy with the products performance ‘the customer has been delighted with the speed and the quality of the work.  Disruption has been kept at a minimum.  It is clear from the overall finish that the products used are of a high performance and quality – there are no signs of wear and tear.  I would be happy to recommend the UltraCrete range to others’.

UltraCrete’s M90 Goes Down in History

UltraCrete’s M90 has been used to install a number of brass plaques in and around the historic town of Haverfordwest in Pembrokeshire.

The ancient town is steeped in history with many points of interest. Pembrokeshire County Council were looking to install approximately 25 brass plaques into the footways to highlight these landmarks.

UltraCrete’s M90 all purpose fast set mortar was the cost effective choice for installing the signs.  The product achieves a high bond strength of >1N/mm²  after 28 days and a compressive strength of 21N/mm² within 2 hours, allowing the area to be opened to traffic thereafter. It can accommodate depths from 10-75mm in one pass and sets in 20 minutes, making it difficult to deface, improving public image and limiting asset liability.

Pembrokeshire CC commented ‘great material, easy to use, fast setting and vandal proof!‘

UltraCrete M90 is supplied in handy 25kg buckets and paper bags  – great for sites with limited access! It is one of a number of advanced repair and refurbishment products within the UltraCrete portfolio . Find out more by contacting us on 01827 254402, or email ultracrete@instarmac.co.uk
