Mailbox, Birmingham

The Mailbox is a prestigious shopping centre, which includes
Harvery Nichols and Armani and housing developments
situated in central Birmingham. The complex is a fusion of
design styles, which complement the old and the new. At the
entrance of the building lie granite setts, blocks and paviours.
The granite setts had been in desperate need of grouting as the
mortar, which had once bound the sets together, had begun to
steadily disintegrate leaving the area hazardous to the public.

The area in front of the Mailbox is in constant use by vehicles
and shoppers. The contractors needed to reinstate the
entrance of the Mailbox with speed and ease, to avoid causing
disruption and inconvenience to residence and shoppers.

The contractors carefully laid and pointed the granite setts
which enabled the area to open to traffi c within four hours of
the Flowpoint being poured. Flowpoint has a workability time of
5 to 15 minutes and at 20°C achieves a compressive strength
of 4N/mm2 in just 24 hours. After 7 days, at 20°C, it attains a
compressive strength of 25N/mm2 and a tensile strength of
1.9N/mm².

The project was completed in record time and with little
disruption to shoppers, residents and traffic.
