Retirement of Phil Staniforth

In 1970 a 15 year old Phil Staniforth left school on a Wednesday and started working at Randall Builder Merchants the very next day, within 5 years Phil was Branch Manager.

Phil’s successful and lengthy career in the building and construction industry has included working for the likes of Browns in Derby, Arthur Sydall in Grantham and Joseph Parr in the North East but it was 1992 when Phil moved to Granfix as National Sales Manager where his love for the tile industry started.

Over the next 24 years Phil developed and nurtured the Granfix brand moving through the ranks to Sales Director in 1995 and then onto Managing Director in 2001.  Over this period Phil took a small product offering and developed it significantly with new product research and development.  He took a relatively unknown brand and grew it to become a top 4 manufacturer of tiling and flooring products in the UK.

His knowledge of the tile industry is second to none with customers always happy to see him and have a chat over a cup of tea.

Over the last 12 months Phil has been instrumental to the acquisition and integration of the Granfix brand into the Instarmac Group, and has enjoyed utilising the additional resources available.

Phil is now moving on to the next chapter of his life and it is with a heavy heart we announce Phil’s retirement from the tile industry.  Phil has been a welcome addition to the Instarmac team and his knowledge, experience and friendly nature will be missed by us all.  We know he is looking forward to spending time with his wife, children and 5 grandchildren and wish him the best of luck in his retirement.

Getting the community involved to tackle potholes using UltraCrete

With highway maintenance budgets reducing, Devon County Council has turned to its local community to help in the fight against potholes.

The Community Road Warden Scheme has been recently established allowing the public to carry out a number of highway repairs on minor roads. There are around 60 volunteers that have undergone free training organised by the council to ensure they can work safely. These volunteers have been provided with UltraCrete’s Permanent Pothole Repair Wet, cold lay asphalt to carry out the repairs along with the appropriate tools.

UltraCrete’s Technical Field Support Manager Nick Holmes has carried out the training, to ensure correct preparation and application methods are used which will facilitate a safe, lasting repair until such time resurfacing can take place.

“We’ve all been shown how to carry out the repairs with the material and it seems to be a quick and easy way to deal with smaller potholes on minor roads before they develop into safety defects which the County Council has to repair.” Cllr Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council Cabinet member for highway management

Rory Ashcroft of UltraCrete says “we are delighted to be involved in this scheme.  Budgets are tight and councils need to look for innovation and cost saving solutions which do not jeopardise the quality of the repair.  Devon County Council has found our Permanent Pothole Wet a perfect material for carrying out quick repairs and we have been happy to support the Community Wardens by supplying free on site training”.

UltraCrete’s Permanent Pothole Repair Wet is suitable for repairs in roads, driveways and car parks and is instantly trafficable, keeping downtime to a minimum. It can be used in all weathers too and comes in a handy 25kg resealable tub, great for sites with limited access.

“I think it will be a good scheme once we really get going. The idea has gone down very well and the material is good.” Barry Thrussell, Community Road Warden for Clyst Hydon.

Repair of larger potholes that meet the safety defect criteria and other safety defect repairs on the highway will continue to be carried out by Devon County Council.

UltraCrete offers a range of HAPAS approved first time patching materials for high performance planned and reactive repairs for further information, call 01827 254402 or email

Bulk vs Bucket: An Argument

Buying asphalt in bulk for reactive road repairs such as potholes can be a popular option. However, Instarmac Group plc is offering up a smaller alternative.

Buying quantities of materials in bulk is often seen as a cheaper and more convenient method of purchasing. However, when it comes to buying and storing asphalt in large quantities for reactive road repairs, such as potholes, there are some notable flaws.

Most asphalt products will stay the same consistency in storage even over a long period of time and it is this characteristic that raises some important issues. Buying and storing asphalt in bulk can be an appealing feature to many contractors and councils (especially as it can be stored for up to 2 years), however, a question needs to be raised about how effective a pothole repair can be when the properties of the asphalt have not changed during this time.

Potholes repaired using bulk stored asphalt stay soft and as a result are of poor quality and only provide a temporary repair with the repair work often coming out within weeks in areas of turning and breaking.

Over the past 40 years, Instarmac Group plc has changed the mindset in the market with its innovative bitumen binder permanent asphalt product – UltraCrete Instant Road Repair®.

UltraCrete Instant Road Repair® is a cold lay asphalt repair solution that offers a first time permanent repair for potholes. Thanks to the flexible properties of Instant Road Repair, the repair moves with the road surface, preventing cracking and failing. It can be used in all weathers and climates allowing potholes to be repaired all year round. What’s more, roads repaired with UltraCrete Instant Road Repair® can be opened to traffic immediately minimising disruption to pedestrians and motorists.

The benefits of UltraCrete Instant Road Repair® far outweigh those of purchasing and storing cheaper asphalt for pothole repair. Instant Road Repair offers a first time permanent repair which means only one visit to site is needed – dramatically reducing the whole life cost of a pothole. What’s more, available in 25kg buckets, UltraCrete Instant Road Repair® allows contractors to be on site quickly, and because the buckets can be resealed and material used again the next day, no asphalt goes to waste.

UltraCrete Instant Road Repair® has been used all around the world, for over 35 years with excellent results, proving that it does pay to “get it right first time”.

Spend wisely, spend well

Details of how a £50m pothole fund is to be divided up between English councils have been revealed

We heard in the Chancellors Autumn statement details of a five year £250m pothole fund to ‘tackle the blight of potholes’ now we learn the details of how the first £50m is to be divided up by English Councils including –

£8.4m             South West

£7.2m             East of England

£5.7m             Midlands

£3.07m          North East

It is estimated that this funding will only go towards repairing 1 million potholes so it is so important councils ensure that potholes are fixed right the first time.

By specifying and using the correct HAPAS approved reinstatement products you can ensure a permanent repair and also reduce your time on the road.

UltraCrete has been investing in such solutions for over 35 years. Our cold lay asphalt products are HAPAS approved and ensure a quality, durable repair, eliminating return visits, traffic management and lane rental charges.
