Is the changing climate damaging our roads?

The simple answer is yes! In the June 2018 issue of World Highways, Editor Mike Woof commented that “the threat to transport infrastructure posed by climate change is highly visible”, the effect of which could have “potentially devastating consequences” on our road network.

Over recent months our news feed has been inundated with reports of extreme weather. Who can forget the devastating images from Okayama, Hiroshima and Yamaguchi in Japan where they are “still reeling from one of its worst flooding disasters in decades” or the extreme snowfall and prolonged freezing temperatures in Canada, Northern America and Northern Europe?

2018 will always be remembered by the UK as  the hottest summer since records began. In some areas of the country, temperatures have reached 32°C causing the asphalt to melt away, leaving the road surface vulnerable to potholes.

In his article, Mike Woof further explained that the “ravages of extreme weather in recent months is now sadly apparent on our road network” and with record levels of rain, snow and heat being recorded, the “trend towards severe weather is worsening” – a worrying thought for everyone all around the world.

Climate change has, and continues, to ignite a passion in many people around the globe, with politicians and campaigners all looking for a solution to reverse its effects. Whilst we may not be able to prevent damage the changing climate has had on our road network, we can make repairs easier and more efficient.

UltraCrete Instant Road Repair is a first time permanent repair which has been continuously developed over the past 40 years. It is being used on a daily basis, all around the globe, and in all climates, with excellent results.

Applied in three easy steps – clean, pour, compact – UltraCrete Instant Road Repair can be applied in all weathers – it even provides a permanent repair in wet and freezing temperatures – and is trafficked immediately, minimising any further disruption to communities and road users.

Potholes caused by severe weather not only cause chaos, they also pose a significant safety risk to road users, particularly cyclists and motorcyclists. As well as ensuring potholes are repaired quickly to prevent accidents, choosing the correct repair material for your repair is also imperative. Asphalt that protrudes from the existing road surface or begins to crack and break out, can be just as dangerous as the pothole itself.

With a skid resistance value (SRV) of ≥ 88, UltraCrete Instant Road Repair provides a safer repair for cyclists and other road users as the repair is compatible with the existing road surface and offers maximum grip for tyres – even in wet weather!

There are many cold lay asphalt repair products available, but Instarmac has  the independent test data to back up its technical claims! Strength is gained by compaction, becoming stronger the more traffic travels over it, making it perfect for heavily trafficked roads and areas of turning and braking.

Choose UltraCrete Instant Road Repair for a trusted, proven and permanent pothole repair that can withstand the world’s most extreme weather and climates. UltraScape lessens the pressure on UK’s plummeting natural resources

In their 2017 Annual Mineral Planning Survey Report (AMPS 2017), the Mineral Products Association (MPA) once again raised concerns about the UK’s diminishing aggregate reserves.

Based on information provided by MPA members, AMPS 2017 revealed that whilst sales of sand and gravel increased by 2.5% and crushed rock by 5.3%, reserves have remained alarmingly low. Sand and gravel has reserves of just 60% and worryingly only 6% of crushed rock sales were replaced during 2016.

These concerning statistics confirm that the demand for raw materials far outweighs any new reserves. This raises an important question for the industry – what can we do to help? One solution is to reduce the use of virgin aggregates by using products containing recycled material.

UltraScape understands the importance of sustainable building solutions and that is why all product development is geared around delivering sustainable solutions, which in turn, helps lessen the pressure on the country’s plummeting natural resources. They are constantly investing in research to continuously reduce their use of raw materials by testing new recycled materials.

With this in mind, UltraScape’s team of technical experts enhanced the formulation of their world renowned bedding mortar and flowable grout to create eco-bed and Flowpoint ECO – bedding and jointing products that contain 20% recycled material.

Launched over 20 years ago, UltraScape eco-bed fine bedding mortar and Flowpoint ECO rapid set flowable grout, have each been tested by an independent UKAS accredited laboratory and are proven to exceed the strict requirements set out in British Standard 7533.

As well as containing 20% recycled material, helping you to significantly reduce the amount of virgin aggregates used, both eco-bed and Flowpoint ECO are pre-blended for ease of use and boast a rapid set time, allowing contractors to move on to other parts of the project quickly, increasing productivity.

It goes without saying that the environmental impacts of eco-bed and Flowpoint ECO are significant, but let’s not forget, that specifying and using these materials also helps towards achieving an Outstanding BREEAM certification – a scheme that is proven to produce more sustainable building developments.

The benefits of using eco-bed fine bedding mortar and Flowpoint ECO flowable grout are clear to see. For further information on these outstanding materials, please contact UltraScape’s team of experts by email or by calling 01827 254402.

Minimising Risk. Maximising Performance. Delivering Confidence

Industrial flooring solutions from UltraFloor

With so many products available on the market, and the requirements of projects more demanding than ever, choosing the perfect products for your industrial flooring installation can be an intimidating prospect.

Manufacturing facilities need floors that are durable, can bear the weight of heavy machinery and are resistant to spillages. Similarly, with the constant trafficking from forklift trucks, warehouses need subfloor materials that won’t crack and become uneven, causing serious health and safety risks.

UltraFloor, part of the multi award-winning Instarmac Group plc, have been providing contractors with trusted and proven subfloor preparation materials suitable for industrial flooring applications for over 15 years.

Their range of smoothing underlayments, bulking concrete, primer and surface finish have had their performance capabilities tested at Instarmac’s state-of-the-art laboratory – giving you peace of mind that UltraFloor materials are designed to last.

Level IT Top heavy duty, abrasive resistant surface finish has been designed for use as a wear surface, and can receive forklift traffic after only 36 hours – the ideal product for warehouses and manufacturing facilities where downtime is not an option!

Ideal for use with Level IT Top, Level IT Base heavy duty, deep fill smoothing underlayment has been formulated to build depths of up to 50mm thickness and boasts a high compressive strength – an important requirement for all industrial flooring applications.

Both Level IT Top and Level IT Base can be pump or trowel applied for ease of application, are moisture tolerant, have a 30-40 minute working time and can receive foot traffic after just 3 hours.

UltraFloor’s industrial flooring range also includes Level IT Super Flex 30, a rapid setting and drying fibre reinforced, flexible finishing compound. Designed specifically for screwed and fixed plywood floors where vibration and movement is likely, Level IT Super Flex 30 can receive bonded floor coverings after 1 hour and resin finishes after 24 hours.

What’s more, Level IT Super Flex 30 can receive foot traffic in as little as 30 minutes and forklift traffic after 24 hours, allowing you to move on to another part of the project quickly, increasing productivity.

For deep section repairs without bulking aggregates, UltraFloor recommends the use of a flowable bulking concrete such as Fill IT. This self compacting, rapid setting and drying flowable concrete has a set time of 20 minutes and is suitable for internal and external backfilling up to 300mm.

Completing UltraFloor’s industrial flooring range is Prime IT Multi-surface Primer. Designed to promote the adhesion of UltraFloor smoothing underlayments, Prime IT Multi-surface Primer is suitable for both porous and non-porous substrates, is moisture tolerant and reduces pinholing, minimising the risk of costly failures.

Why take the risk?

There are a number of manufacturers in the highways industry all claiming their products and services are the best available but with over 40 years of experience in supplying the sector with high performance maintenance materials, Instarmac has the evidence to back up its claims!

It can often be tempting to try an alternative repair material, especially if it’s being offered to you at a lower price, however, without any proof of product performance, is it really worth taking the risk?

Repair and maintenance products that fail once installed cause no end of problems. Contractors have to be moved from other projects to carry out the repairs, decreasing productivity and potentially putting you behind schedule on other projects – and let’s not forget the costly fines you could be subjected to by having to re-open the site!

Instarmac have been manufacturing world renowned highway maintenance products for over four decades. They understand the needs of the industry and the importance of using products that are guaranteed to perform, reducing the strain on already tight budgets.

By listening to the needs of the industry and their customers, Instarmac have developed a suite of products that have been thoroughly tested by an independent third party and are proven to provide a first time, permanent repair every single time.

Over recent years, the market has been flooded with repair and maintenance products all claiming HAPAS Approval. This approval provides you with the assurance that your chosen repair material is designed to last, but if you have recently switched to an alternative supplier, do you have the same assurances that the materials will be delivered to the correct location at the agreed date and time? Is it worth taking a gamble and being at risk of costly fines because you were unable to complete the project on time?

Instarmac’s high quality products are delivered on their privately owned, FORS Silver accredited fleet that is fully tracked in-house, offering you accurate deliveries, reduced damages and peace of mind that products will be delivered on time allowing you to complete the project as scheduled.

Instarmac have been supplying trusted and proven products to national highway agencies, contractors, local authorities and commercial organisations in the UK and around the world since 1977. Every one of their clients benefit from their personal, efficient and award-winning customer service that includes free text updates, email confirmation, Product Planner App and dedicated field and office based customer support.

What’s more, Instarmac’s free on-site training and product demonstrations will help you make the most of their high performance products, reducing failures, increasing productivity and saving you money.

Next time you consider changing your supplier of highway repair materials, ask yourself, are you willing to risk your reputation?

Network Rail to modernise signalling system

Earlier this year, Network Rail began the next phase of their much anticipated Railway Upgrade Plan, a project that involves modernising the current system by updating a number of signals across the Norwich, Yarmouth and Lowestoft network.

The ambitious £68 million investment programme includes the installation of 22 power operated points, a computer based signalling control system as well as 66 new colour-light LED signals.

UltraCrete offers a range of rail maintenance and installation products such as QC10 fast set rapid strength concrete, which is ideal for the installation of heavy duty signals, like the LED signals being used by Network Rail. Independently tested by an approved third party, QC10 is proven to provide a first time, permanent installation, can be applied from depths of 30 – 250mm and is trafficked in as little as 2 hours, allowing contractors to move on to another project quickly, increasing productivity and helping to meet tight deadlines.

The Railway Upgrade Plan also involves upgrading the current manual operated level crossings with a modern, remote controlled system. To guarantee an effortless and lasting installation, UltraCrete advises installing rail bolts with HF high flow precision grout.

Suitable for the infill of voids from 10 – 100mm, HF can be pumped or poured for ease of application and boasts an impressive compressive strength of 29N/mm² in just 24 hours. What’s more, HF’s formulation doesn’t contain any reactive materials which eliminates any possibility of corrosion, giving you peace of mind that rail bolts installed with HF are designed to last.

Should any concrete sleepers become damaged during signal improvements, UltraCrete QC10 F flowable fast set rapid strength concrete is on hand to carry out quick and permanent repairs. Fibre modified for added strength, QC10 F achieves a 20N/mm² compressive strength after just 90 minutes, is easy to mix and literally pours from the bucket facilitating a speedy application.

QC10 fast set rapid strength concrete, HF high flow precision grout and QC10 F flowable fast set rapid strength concrete are just three products in UltraCrete’s Rail Refurbishment Solutions range. Each product in the range can be found on the London Underground compliance register, have been independently tested and are proven to provide first time permanent, fast setting properties to minimise your possession time and save you money. UltraFloor scores a century at Old Trafford Cricket Ground

UltraFloor customer, Branagan Flooring Services Ltd, have completed subfloor preparation at the prestigious Old Trafford Cricket Ground – home to the Lancashire County Cricket Club.

With a stadium capacity of 26,000, Old Trafford Cricket Ground is one of the largest cricket venues in the UK and has played host to international matches since 1884.

Lancashire County Cricket Club – one of 18 first class county clubs within England and Wales –  had their first match at Old Trafford Cricket Ground in 1864 and have been playing there ever since.

The current flooring in the Home and Away balconies had failed and needed to be replaced. With fixtures scheduled months in advance, it was crucial that the new flooring was installed in between games to eliminate any disruption to the thousands of spectators.

In light of this, CFA member and commercial flooring specialists, Branagan Flooring Services Ltd, had just 6 days to complete the 80sqm flooring project.

With such a small window of time to complete the project, Branagan Flooring Services Ltd needed confidence that their chosen subfloor preparation materials would perform without any issues. With this in mind, they selected UltraFloor’s Level IT Bond and DPM IT to complete the installation.

Once the failed flooring had been removed and the concrete subfloor scabbled, Level IT Bond was applied at 6mm before the application of DPM IT.

The exceptional adhesion characteristics of Level IT Bond make it ideal for use over a wide variety of subfloors and substrates, including old adhesive residues, in both commercial and domestic environments. Its low odour formulation mean Level IT Bond is equally suited to confined areas proving particularly popular in the education, health and hospitality sectors.

With a set time of 90 – 120 minutes, Level IT Bond can receive bonded floor coverings after 4 hours, making this an ideal floor leveller for projects with a tight deadline, such as this one.

What’s more, because Level IT Bond is available as a two component system, it takes the guesswork out of mixing, reducing site errors and guaranteeing a perfect application every time.

DPM IT is a two component, solvent free epoxy resin system for use as a surface damp proof membrane. Designed to provide protection against subfloor moisture, DPM IT has a pot life of 45 – 75 minutes, a cure time of 5 hours and boasts a 98% RH floor moisture tolerance.

View an application of Level IT Bond and DPM IT.

Branagan Flooring Services Ltd are pleased to announce that the project was completed on time and both Level IT Bond and DPM IT performed really well.

For further information on Level IT Bond and DPM IT, pricing enquiries, or to place an order, please contact the UltraFloor sales team by emailing ultrafloor@instarmac.co.uk or calling 01827 254402.

Completing the range is ProFlex CSA – a Calcium Sulphate Aluminate based adhesive for compatibility with calcium sulphate substrates. This compatibility ensures low tension throughout the curing process without the need for barrier primers.
