Potholes bring traffic to a standstill on major Indian highway

In recent months, the news has been full of reports on potholes and the damaging effect they have on road infrastructure, cars and local government budgets – UltraCrete, from the award-winning Instarmac Group plc, can help!

The Times of India has reported that as a consequence of heavy rainfall, a number of crater sized potholes have appeared along the NH 66, turning the much used road into a ‘death trap for motorists’.

What’s more, these dangerous potholes are causing severe congestion as motorists attempt to navigate their way through pothole riddled roads – some motorists have reported daily delays of up to 3 hours.

Worryingly, it’s not just happening here! Potholes are causing chaos on many expressways across India – quite a disruption for a population of 1.3 billion.

Road repair is a topical issue in India with the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) still actively working on their 2012 US$70 billion road highway expansion programme. As well as building new roads and bridges across India, the programme also involves repairing potholes on the existing highways and this is where UltraCrete can help!

UltraCrete Permanent Pothole Repair® is a first time permanent repair which has been continuously developed over the past 40 years and used all around the world with excellent results. It’s used on a daily basis in many countries around the world including Malaysia, Japan, Africa and most of Europe.

There are many cold lay asphalt repair products available, but Instarmac backs up its technical claims! Strength is gained by compaction becoming stronger the more traffic travels over it, making it perfect for heavily trafficked roads and areas of turning and braking.

Due to its hardy nature, UltraCrete Permanent Pothole Repair® is also suitable for repairing damaged asphalt in car parks, footpaths, cycle paths, railway stations and driveways – potholes don’t just appear in roads!

With a skid resistance value (SRV) of ≥ 88, UltraCrete Permanent Pothole Repair® provides a safer repair for cyclists and other road users as the repair is compatible with the existing road surface and offers maximum grip for tyres – even in wet weather.

Applied in 3 easy steps – clean, pour, compact – UltraCrete Permanent Pothole Repair® can be applied in all weathers – it can even be used in freezing temperatures. Furthermore, potholes repaired with UltraCrete Permanent Pothole Repair® can be trafficked instantly making it ideal for environments where potholes are currently causing severe delays to motorists.

Reduce your environmental impact with UltraCrete Instaline

Sustainability and environmental impact is extremely important to UltraCrete and a significant consideration when developing products and solutions for today’s highway maintenance problems.

UltraCrete are constantly investing in research and development to continuously decrease their use of raw materials by testing new recycled materials. Many of  their high performance repair products contain recycled material or are manufactured using renewable sources and UltraCrete Instaline is no different!

Products containing binder material are, more often than not, manufactured from natural sources  that cannot be replenished – an issue we should all be concerned about. However, Instaline thermoplastic road marking is different from similar products on the market. More than 70% of its binder material is made from renewable sources, helping to lessen the pressure on the country’s plummeting natural resources.

Manufactured using over 90% recycled glass particles to deliver an impressive Skid Resistance Value (SRV) of 55, UltraCrete Instaline is also phthalate free. This dangerous chemical has received negative press coverage over recent months after researchers linked phthalates to asthma, obesity, Type II Diabetes and even some forms of cancer – a worrying though for anyone who regularly comes in to contact with the chemical.

What’s more, all coloured pigments used in Instaline thermoplastic road marking are 100% organic.

As well as its significant environmental properties, Instaline also boasts a number of high performance qualities.

Ideal for the reinstatement of line areas on car pars, roads and carriageways, Instaline thermoplastic road marking is the only material that provides a skid resistance value in excess of 55, straight from the box.

Available in 3 colours, Instaline is delivered pre-beaded, without ‘difficult to remove’ plastic backing and will remain flexible and easy to un-roll in temperatures as low as 5°C – facilitating an easy and straightforward application.

What’s more, Instaline is available in 5m rolls and can be cut to your exact requirements, eliminating wasted product.

Can you current provider offer the same?

UltraScape is king of the hill at Yorkshire beauty spot

UltraScape’s BS 7533 compliant Mortar Paving System has been used as part of the refurbishment of Crescent Hill in North Yorkshire.

Wilf Noble Construction, the chosen contractors for this exiting development, used Pro-Bed HS fine bedding mortar, Pro-Prime slurry primer and Flowpoint rapid set grout to install paving along Crescent Hill – a street that connects the local town to the beautiful 5-mile  golden beach and along the seafront promenade.

The project required paving to be installed on a steep incline which made choosing the perfect suite of products challenging.

There are many reasons why Wilf Noble Construction chose to use UltraScape’s BS 7533 Mortar Paving System. Projects incorporating BS 7533 compliant materials benefit from a reduction in failures and considerable whole life cost savings. Every product in UltraScape’s Mortar Paving System has been independently tested by an UKAS accredited laboratory to assess their performance abilities. This method removed the uncertainty of site batched mortars and offers a minimum construction life of 40 years.

Pre-blended for ease of use, Pro-Bed HS fine bedding mortar provides the ultimate laying course for all types of paving. Available in 3 sizes, 25kg, 30 tonne silos and 1 tonne bulk bags – the latter of which was used on this project – Pro-Bed HS provides you with the perfect amount of material for all project sizes.

Pro-Bed HS can be laid from 10mm – 75mm, is shrinkage compensated and can be opened to foot traffic in just 12 hours, allowing contractors to move on to the next part of the project quickly.

Formulated to provide an exceptional bond between your paving element and Pro-Bed HS, Pro-Prime slurry primer eliminates costly failures caused by general wear and tear and heavy load bearing.

To complete the installation, Flowpoint rapid set grout was used in Natural Grey to joint the selected natural stone pavers. With an initial set after just 15 minutes, and a walk on time of one hour, it is unsurprising that Flowpoint has become synonymous with fast application, cost-effective and robust jointing.

Important updates to British Standard 5385-1:2018

Following a 5 year review, BSI have made important updates to British Standard 5385-1:2018 Design and installation of ceramic, natural stone and mosaic wall tiling in normal conditions – code of practice.

Published in June 2018, perhaps the most significant change to BS 5385-1:2018 is the exclusion of plywood and other wood-based boards as a suitable background material for fixing ceramic and natural stone tiles to walls.

The British Standard states that “the use of sheets or boards subject to movement from changes in moisture content should be avoided. Plywood and other wood-based sheets or boards should not be used for direct tiling.” In place of  this, the Standard now recommends that use of tile backer boards when tiling directly on to walls. For clarification on the best tile backer board for your installation, please contact UltraTileFix’s team of technical experts by calling 01827 254402.

It is worth noting that, whilst plywood and other wood-based boards are no longer recommended for direct wall tiling, good quality plywood is a perfectly acceptable substrate for floor tiling, providing it is properly braced to be rigid and non-deflecting, and is not being used in wet areas.

Alongside this important update, BSI have also added a number of recommendations to BS 5385-1:2018, which reflect the latest changes in the tiling industry.

Over recent years  there has been a significant increase in tile types and sizes available to purchase, with larger formats and  thin ceramic panels rising in popularity. With this in mind, the Standard has been revised to include guidance on how to best apply these new varieties of tile, for example, tiles of a certain weight, such as 9mm porcelain tiles which weigh over 14kg, “should be solidly bedded regardless of their size.”

Grout widths are also considered in the 2018 Standard, concluding that joint widths should vary depending on the facial area of a tile. For instance, smaller tiles which measure up to 600mm in length require a minimum joint width of 2mm and larger tiles, up to 1200mm in length, should have a minimum joint width of 3mm. The Standard also advises that joints between ceramic panels should increase relative to the panel size, for example, a ceramic panel 3m in length requires a minimum joint width of 5mm.

It is vital that everyone working in the tiling industry understands and implements these important changes. For further information on the revised British Standard or to request a free on-site visit, please contact Alan Collins, UltraTileFix’s Technical Field Support and Training Manager, by calling 07825 427654 or emailing ultratilefix@instarmac.co.uk.
