Utility repairs

Instarmac leads the way for utility repairs

Failed ironwork is a nuisance. It causes endless damage to cars driving over it, which then results in further deterioration to the surrounding road surface, it is noisy for pedestrians and homeowners unfortunate enough to live near the damaged site and let’s not forget the traffic management and repair costs associated with reinstating ironwork.

With road maintenance and utility repair budgets being cut all over the world, finding a cost-effective and permanent solution to repairing failed ironwork is not just a local problem but a global one as well.

Cold Weather Working

A guide to cold weather working

At Instarmac, it’s our priority to ensure that you always have the information and support that you need to help make the best use of our products. Cold weather and freezing temperatures can have an effect on storage, handling and the preparation of construction materials. Keep reading for some handy cold weather working tips to ensure an uninterrupted workflow over the next few months.

The industry advises that cement based products should only be used in temperatures of 5ºC and rising. This is to prevent the water in the cement from freezing before the product has had chance to cure, causing potential failures once it has thawed out – it is better to take precautions before any work is carried out rather than having to visit the site again to carry out further repair work.

UltraCrete Cementitious Bedding Mortars

All cementitious products are affected by temperature, particularly standard set products. The cooler it is, the slower the setting time. So in the winter months, why not upgrade to a higher performing mortar that are less affected by low temperatures? We provide a number of different grades and our Technical Team are always available to advise you on the best material for your project.

UltraCrete Cold Lay Asphalts

We manufacture all our cold lay asphalts on a ‘just in time basis’ to provide you with the freshest material every time. However, during the colder months, you may experience a slight firming of the product. This is very easily remedied by applying slight pressure to the side of the bag, which will restore  the material to its normal consistency. UltraCrete’s range of world renowned cold lay asphalts have been used all around the world in varying temperatures.

UltraScape Cementitious Mortars

UltraScape bedding mortars can be affected by low temperatures, however, if the following conditions are met, they can be used in temperatures below 5ºC.

  • The ground to be laid upon is not frozen
  • The temperature is 2ºC and rising
  • The products are protected from frost

Cement Based Tile Adhesives and Levelling Compounds

You may be surprised to hear, that even when used internally, cementitious tile adhesives and levelling compounds can be affected by colder temperatures resulting in extended working times.

When cement based tile adhesives and levelling compounds, we recommend a minimum air temperature of 5ºC. Where conditions fall below this temperature, it is common place, and advisable, to use room heaters to raise and maintain air and substrate temperatures whilst work is progressed and until products are cured. If using a heater, it is important to direct to heat into the air and not directly at the freshly applied material.

It is important to protect all cement-based products from wind, rain and moisture by storing them in dry, frost-free conditions. We recommend that you cover all products with a waterproof sheet and stack any bags or buckets on a pallet to prevent them coming in to contact with cold or damp floors.

For further clarification on any of the hints mentioned above, or for information on how to use a specific product during the winter months, please contact our team of Technical experts by email or by calling 01827 254402.

eco-bed environmentally friendly bedding mortar

UltraScape introduces eco-bed – the new environmentally friendly bedding mortar

UltraScape, part of the award-winning Instarmac Group plc, are delighted to announce the launch of their new environmentally friendly bedding mortar – eco-bed.

Part of UltraScape’s world renowned Mortar Paving System, eco-bed is a fine bedding mortar manufactured to meet and exceed the strict requirements of British Standard 7533. UltraScape eco-bed offers offers all the benefits you would expect from a BS 7533 compliant bedding mortar, including an impressive compressive strength or 45N/mm², but contains 20% recycled material.

The addition of recycled material means that for every 1,000m² of paving bedded with eco-bed and jointed using flowpoint eco, an environmentally friendly rapid set flowable grout, 12 tonnes of recycled material will be used (based on 30mm bed depth, 10mm joint depth and a stone size of 600 x 400 x 50mm). This significantly reduces the use of virgin aggregates, helping lessen the pressure on the country’s plummeting natural resources and also helps towards achieving an Excellent CEEQUAL Award or Outstanding BREEAM certification.

Pre-blended for ease of use, eco-bed can be laid from 10 – 100mm, is shrinkage compensated and can be opened to foot traffic in 12 hours, allowing contractors to move on to the next part of their project quickly.

What’s more, UltraScape eco-bed, alongside flowpoint rapid setting grout, flowpoint eco environmentally friendly rapid setting grout and pavejoint plus jointing sand, is now available in brand new, stylish packaging.

UltraScape are committed to reducing their environmental impact, and so, from December 2018, eco-bed fine bedding mortar will replace UltraScape Pro-Bed HS and Pro-Bed HS ECO in 25kg bags. Pro-Bed HS will still be available to purchase in 1 tonne bags and 28 tonne silos.

For further information on eco-bed and  the other materials in UltraScape’s BS 7533 Mortar Paving System please contact their experienced sales team by email or by calling 01827 254402.

UltraScape used above Arctic Circle

UltraScape performs above Arctic Circle

Instarmac International’s Norwegian partner, Betomur AS, have supplied UltraScape’s BS 7533 Mortar Paving System to the Norwegian Public Roads Administration as part of their ongoing improvements to Bodo City Centre.

The aim of the rejuvenation project is to make Bodo an attractive city to live and operate in. This will be achieved by developing efficient, environmentally friendly and safe transport which includes new roundabouts, bridges, underpasses, cycle lanes and sidewalks.

Located just north of the Arctic Circle, Bodo is known for its extremely cold and windy winters, and so, the materials used to install the transport infrastructure needed to withstand these extremely cold temperatures and not break out and cause any damage during the freezing winter months.

In 2017, the first three roundabouts were installed using UltraScape’s British Standard BS 7533 Mortar Paving System. The fourth roundabout was completed in 2018, with the fifth, and final, roundabout due to be installed in 2019.

The  durable and aesthetically pleasing finish of UltraScape’s Mortar Paving System made it an ideal choice for completing these exciting upgrades.

The project began by priming the armed concrete substrate with Pro-Prime slurry primer before Pro-Bed HS high performance bedding mortar was applied. The pavers were then primed using Pro-Prime and grouted using Flowpoint ECO – an environmentally friendly, rapid set flowable grout, which contains 20% recycled glass.

Supplied by Instarmac International’s Norwegian partner, Betomur AS, Pro-Bed HS can be laid from 10-75mm, is pre-blended for ease of use and can be opened to foot traffic in just 12 hours, allowing contractors to move on to the next part of the project quickly.

Formulated to provide an exceptional bond between the paving elements and Pro-Bed HS, Pro-Prime slurry primer eliminates costly failures caused by general wear and tear and heavy load bearing vehicles.

Ideal for large-scale projects, Flowpoint ECO has been developed over a number of years to provide a durable finish which will not crack or stain – a guarantee that was certainly put to the test in the extremely cold winters in Bodo.

Supplied in 25kg bags, Flowpoint ECO can be used to grout joints from 3mm to 50mm and as deep as 200mm in one application – ideal for applications where a number of different sized stones will be used, or on uneven areas, such as this project.

What’s more, Flowpoint ECO can receive foot traffic in 1 hour and vehicular traffic in 4 hours keeping disruption to motorists and pedestrians to a minimum.

UltraScape’s Mortar Paving System is available throughout Norway through Betomur AS. To contact Beotmur please call +47 55 59 44 50 or visit betomur.no.
