UltraFloor is Try-umphant at Widnes Vikings Rugby League Club

G J Flooring Specialist Ltd have used expert subfloor preparation materials from UltraFloor to complete a 300sqm refurbishment of Halton Stadium, home to The Widnes Vikings Rugby League Club.

Background

Experienced flooring contractors, G J Flooring Specialist Ltd were contracted to replace 300sqm of flooring throughout the Karalius Suite at Halton Stadium. The 10 day refurbishment project required new flooring to be laid in the suite’s main floor area, the standing area in front and behind the bar and all toilet floors.

The Challenge

This exciting project required all existing flooring and debris be removed and the subfloor cleaned before installing a combination of carpet tiles, luxury vinyl flooring and slip resistant vinyl across the expansive suite. A product that would prepare the subfloor for a variety of floor coverings was therefore essential to the success of this project.

The Solution

Long-standing UltraFloor customer, and CFA members, G J Flooring Specialist Ltd knew that UltraFloor Prime IT Multi-surface Primer and Level IT Two would make easy work of the 300sqm job.

Prime IT Multi-surface Primer was applied to the concrete substrate in preparation for levelling with Level IT Two.

Formulated to promote adhesion to all UltraFloor smoothing underlayments, Prime IT Multi-surface Primer reduces pinholing, minimising the risk of costly failures. With a coverage rate of 200m² at 3:1 dilution, Prime IT multi-surface Primer is a must-have product for all flooring installation projects.

There are many reasons why Level IT Two has become UltraFloor’s most popular floor leveller. Its exceptional flow characteristics make it a very easy material to apply to a variety of subfloors in both commercial and domestic flooring projects. Its low odour formulation means this fantastic all-rounder leveller is equally suited to confined areas, proving particularly popular in the education, health and hospitality sectors.

With a set time of 2.5 hours, Level IT Two can receive bonded floor coverings after just 12 hours, making it an ideal choice for projects with a tight deadline. What’s more, because Level IT Two is available as a two component system, it takes the guesswork out of mixing, reducing site errors and guaranteeing a perfect application every time.

Results

G J Flooring Specialist Ltd completed the project on time and received excellent feedback from the customer.

UltraFloor scores at Peterborough United Football Club

UltraFloor are delighted to have provided Stanground Carpets & Flooring with expert subfloor preparation materials to complete a 650sqm renovation at Weston Homes Stadium, home to Peterborough United.

Background

Experienced flooring contractors and CFA members, Stanground Carpets & Flooring had been commissioned to lay 650sqm of flooring throughout the Network Lounge Bar, Tommy Robson Bar, all corridor areas and 15 Executive Boxes in the BGL stand at Peterborough United football stadium.

The Challenge

Before the new Moduelo flooring could be installed, the concrete power floated substrate required a flooring compound that would smooth over any areas of unevenness and dry completely level to allow the chosen floor covering to be laid correctly.

The project also required a repair mortar to restore the stairs to their former glory after becoming damaged through constant trafficking

The Solution

Long-standing UltraFloor customers, Stanground Carpets & Flooring chose to use Prime IT Multi-surface Primer and Level IT Renovate to complete the £25,000 project at this exciting location.

Developed for the renovation of existing floors, Level IT Renovate is fibre reinforced for added strength and to minimise the risk of hairline cracks – reducing a common cause of failure.

Suitable for deep applications from 3-40mm, Level IT Renovate is multi-purpose for extensive use and boasts excellent flow properties, making this flexible and versatile floor leveller ideal for a wide range of flooring substrates.

Level IT Renovate is protein free, reducing the risk and spread of bacteria, and is low odour providing a pleasant environment for contractors, homeowners and any staff working within the project area.

What’s more, Level IT Renovate has a working time of 20-30 minutes, can be walked on in as little as 2-2.5 hours and can receive floor coverings in just 4 hours.

To complete the project, Stanground Carpets & Flooring used Patch IT to repair the damaged stairs. The slump free characteristics of Patch IT repair mortar make it the ideal product for repairing small cracks in walls and floors, concrete stair edges and for creating coves and ramps.

The Results

Everyone involved in the restoration of the BGL stand were delighted with the finished flooring. Thanks to the rapid setting properties of the UltraFloor materials, and the expertise of Stanground Carpets & Flooring, this project was completed 2 days ahead of schedule.

UltraFloor turns a house into a home

Saint Flooring have used subfloor preparation materials from UltraFloor to complete the first stage of a £500,000 new housing apartment block in Milton Keynes.

Background

UK leading approved flooring and interior installer to the new house build industry, Saint Flooring, have used UltraFloor DPM IT, Prime IT Multi-surface Primer and Level IT Two to complete the first stage of a 10,307sqm flooring project at an apartment block in Milton Keynes.

The Challenge

Saint Flooring faced a number of challenges whilst working on site. As well as following all COVID Government guidance, contractors discovered that the some floors in the apartment block and very long corridors were out by up to 10mm.

The Solution

In order to install the chosen Amtico, domestic vinyl and carpet tile floor coverings, the ground floor was scabbled to remove laitance, and after a moisture test was carried out, DPM IT, Prime IT Multi-surface Primer and Level IT Two were all applied.

A similar process occurred on the upper floors, with the addition of copper discs to remove any contaminants.

DPM IT is a two component, solvent free epoxy resin system for use as a surface damp proof membrane. Designed to provide protection against subfloor moisture, DPM IT has a pot life of 45 – 75 minutes, a cure time of 5 hours and boasts a 98% RH floor moisture tolerance.

What’s more, because Level IT Two is available as a two component system, it takes the guesswork out of mixing, reducing site errors and guaranteeing a perfect application every time.

Results

Work began in October 2020 and the first block was completed in December 2020 with fantastic results.

Saint Flooring commented, “We can’t fault the performance or the finish. The subfloor was very porous so a DPM was needed more than anticipated but has worked well and allowed us to finish the job on time for the contractor.”

Kier record 82% reduction in repeat visits thanks to UltraCrete Tough Patch®

Leading UK construction and infrastructure services company, Kier, had received concerns from repair crews across a number of different depots, that there was an inconsistency in both their approach to pothole repairs and how long the repairs lasted in each area. After working closely with market-leading highway specialists, UltraCrete, Kier have recorded a massive 82% reduction in repeat visits to the same pothole repair site.

Background

Kier reviewed all data from pothole repairs between April 2019 and January 2020 to get a clear picture on the problems they faced. The data collected showed that, during this period, there were 98 instances, split across 17 routes, where a repeat visit had been made to repair a pothole.

The Challenge

When trying to find an explanation for this worrying data, Kier discovered that there were a number of discrepancies in the way repairs were being carried out, meaning that some repairs didn’t last as long as anticipated.

It was, therefore, of the utmost importance that Kier could find a way to address these inconsistencies in order to minimise the number of interventions on the network.

The Solution

Market-leading highway specialists, UltraCrete worked alongside Kier to review their processes to help find a solution.

Dave Youell, Strategic Account Manager, and Nick Holmes, Technical Training and Support Manager at UltraCrete, held remote discussions with Kier and recommended Tough Patch® as the ideal solution for their problems.

Tough Patch® is a PTS PAS approved, cold lay surface material for road repairs, which utilises a reactive binder that rapidly cures to create a first time, permanent repair that will accept traffic immediately after installation. By utilising Tough Patch®, the amount of time needed for closures on a highway can be reduced, resulting in a significantly safer working environment for the Keir operatives carrying out the work.

Quick and easy to apply, Tough Patch® can be used to repair defects in pavements, driveways, car parks and on high speed roads – it even provides a first time permanent repair in wheel turning locations such as junctions, traffic lights and roundabouts.

As part their partnership, both Nick and Dave visited a number of Kier’s pothole crews to discuss any questions or issues the operatives had, and finally, to demonstrate the best way to apply and use Tough Patch® to maximise the effectiveness of the material.

The Results

Having one superior pothole repair material and standardising the process of repairing potholes has resulted in a huge reduction of interventions.

Of the original 98 instances identified where a repeat visit was required, after using Tough Patch® between February and April 2020, only 21 sites were revisited, resulting in an 82% reduction on repeat visits.

For more information on Tough Patch® and how UltraCrete can help you reduce the number of repeat visits to site, please contact their team of highway specialists by emailing ultracrete@instarmac.co.uk or calling +44 (0) 1827 254402. 72% of drivers have performed a dangerous manoeuvre because of a pothole

A recent study of UK road users has found that 72% of drivers have had to perform a dangerous manoeuvre to avoid the many potholes blighting the road network – and this was not the only chilling statistic National Pothole Day uncovered.

National Pothole Day has surveyed over a thousand road users, including motorists, cyclists and motorcyclists, to understand how potholes affect the everyday road user.

Worryingly, they found that 7% of drivers have been involved in an accident because of a pothole and that 66% of people have had their vehicles damaged because of potholes, with 69% spending over £100 to repair the damage.

Seeing potholes on our daily commute has become commonplace, but National Pothole Day has found that a shocking 72% of drivers see at least 5 potholes on their daily commute and 70% of motorists have experienced delays on their journey because of them. It is therefore unsurprising that over 20% of road users list potholes as the most annoying aspect of their daily commute – ahead of tailgating, speeding and road rage.

One of the aims of National Pothole Day’s survey was to truly understand what changes need to be made to make a real difference to the pothole crisis and to give people the opportunity to express their opinions on the state of UK roads.

On the materials being used to repair potholes, one participant commented: “Cheapest of the cheap. Usually it doesn’t last long. We have one stretch of busy road (about a mile long) where there are 15 large deep potholes on one side of the road and 10 on the opposite side.”

Despite the additional funding for pothole repairs released last year, with statistics like these, it is clear that the pothole crisis isn’t going away any time soon. The question then emerges, how do make the best use of the additional funding to try to repair the country’s crumbling road network once and for all?

UltraCrete, proud sponsor of National Pothole Day, have been researching and manufacturing pothole repair materials for over 40 years. They have established strong relationships over the past four decades with local authorities and highway contractors up and down the country to develop a suite of first time permanent pothole repair materials.

UltraCrete’s Technical and Site Support Team also carry out regular training with contractors to educate operatives on the best way to apply their materials to guarantee a first time permanent repair.

21% of cyclists have been involved in an accident due to potholes

A recent study of UK cyclists has found that shockingly, 21% of cyclists have been involved in an accident because of a pothole with 22% resulting in a personal injury – and this was not the only chilling statistic National Pothole Day uncovered.

National Pothole Day has surveyed over a thousand road users, including cyclists, motorcyclists and motorists to understand how potholes affect the everyday road user.

It is therefore unsurprising that over 19% of cyclists list potholes as the most annoying aspect of their daily commute – ahead of inconsiderate drivers, punctures and road rage.

One of the aims of National Pothole Day’s survey was to truly understand what changes need to be made to make a real difference to the pothole crisis and to give people the opportunity to express their opinions on the state of UK roads.

On the materials being used to repair potholes, one participant commented: “The problem with potholes and surface defects is they are usually repaired with substandard materials, or workmanship, with the result being in a few weeks or months, the repair breaks up and it’s back to a pothole. About five years ago a 200 metre section of road was resurfaced – lovely!… only within a week it was dug up in several places. Now it looks like a patchwork quilt! On a bike you need to weave to avoid the worst irregularities.”

Despite the additional funding for pothole repairs released last year, with statistics like these, it is clear that the pothole crisis isn’t going away any time soon. The question then emerges, how do make the best use of the additional funding to try to repair the country’s crumbling road network once and for all?
