Tough Patch outperforms competitor products

Leading service provider in the water and wastewater infrastructure sectors, Morrison Water Services, have trialled UltraCrete Tough Patch® for the reinstatement around water meter boxes.

Morrison Water Services, who manage the contract for Yorkshire Water, were looking to provide a commercially advantageous alternative to their current surface course material without compromising on the workability or performance of the product.

After careful research and meetings with UltraCrete’s product experts, Morrison Water Services agreed to trial UltraCrete Tough Patch® in a footway.

The Challenge

Morrison Water Services have been using their current product as a surface course around water metres for some time. It was, therefore, imperative that Tough Patch® provided the same, or exceeded, the performance and workability of their current repair product.

The trial took place in January and February 2022 when colder temperatures can affect the performance of some surface course materials.

The Solution

UltraCrete Tough Patch® is a PTS PAS approved, cold lay surface material for road and utility repairs, which utilises a reactive binder that rapidly cures to create a first time, permanent repair that will accept traffic immediately after installation. By utilising Tough Patch®, the amount of time needed for closures can be reduced, resulting in a significantly safer working environment.

Quick and easy to apply, Tough Patch® is just as suited to repair defects in pavements, driveways, car parks and on high speed roads, as it is to install and repair utility access covers. It even provides a first time permanent repair in notoriously difficult wheel turning areas, such as junctions, traffic lights and roundabouts.

Morrison Water Services, on behalf of Yorkshire Water, visited the repair site 4 weeks later to find that Tough Patch® looked as good as the day it was installed.

On the performance of Tough Patch®, Lewis Thorpe from Morrison Water Services commented: “It’s more pliable out of the bag, even with the material being on the van over the weekend in cold temperatures. The foil bags are better as they do not tear easily, reducing waste, and it had a better finish once compacted.”

Ben Land from PBHS, sub-contractors working with Morrison on this trial, commented: “Tough Patch® has better workability and is easy to move around. The material seems fresher and had a solid, firm finish instantly which will prevent defects issued by Councils.”
