Instarmac delivers permanent pothole repairs to five bridges in New York State

Instarmac’s Canadian Licensee, Da-Lee, has supplied Instarmac Permanent Pothole Repair® to the New York State Bridge Authority (NYSBA) ensuring they can make urgent permanent repairs to five of their bridges spanning the Hudson River.

Background

Bear Mountain Bridge, Newburgh-Beacon “Hamilton Fish” Bridge, Mid-Hudson “Franklin D. Roosevelt” Bridge, Kingston-Rhinecliff “George Clinton” Bridge and Rip Van Winkle Bridge are maintained by NYSBA and were all in urgent need of a rapid, permanent repair to help maintain road safety standards.

The challenge

NYSBA recognised they needed a products which could reliably withstand extreme changes in temperatures, that would provide a permanent first time repair to avoid costly repeat visits to site and could be sourced at short notice to help keep up with demand.

For the past 15 years NYSBA had been using a bagged cold patch product, which provided a temporary fix during the summer, however during the winter months the product wasn’t sufficiently robust enough to successfully keep the roads surfaces on the Hudson bridges in acceptable order, particularly during heavy storms.

The solution

Instarmac Permanent Pothole Repair® is a 3rd party approved, first time permanent patching material for high performance planned and reactive repairs. Following consultation with Da-Lee, NYSBA trialled Instarmac Permanent Pothole Repair® in October 2018 and, pleased with the initial tests, the Authority took another pallet for further trials in November 2018.

Discussing Instarmac Permanent Pothole Repair® and how the products performed during the winter in low temperatures, Michael R. Lindhorst, Senior Maintenance at NYSBA, said:” We were very impressed at the way the product held in during those months, especially in some heavy rain storms, where the previous product just washed straight out.”

Greg Hill, Bridge Foreman for NYSBA went on to explain how the product, supplied by Da-Lee, has saved time and money, commenting; “The product has reduced the weekend call outs that we have and we no longer worry about getting called back out to the same pothole during the same weekend. The guys call it buckets of love and for any emergency this is the go to product for NYSBA.”

As a result of their success with Instarmac Permanent Pothole Repair®, NYSBA has also started to use an additional Instarmac manufactured product, QC10F, for their concrete patch repairs and this has also been a huge time saver during for the Authority during the winter months, as it can cure off in 10 minutes even in minus temperatures.
