UltraFloor system supports major healthcare flooring upgrade at Russells Hall Hospital

A specialist flooring installation by Midlands Flooring has successfully transformed key public areas at Russells Hall Hospital in Birmingham, delivering a durable, hygienic and visually enhanced finish designed to meet the demands of a busy NHS environment.

The 1,500sqm project focused on the hospital’s main entrance area, with additional works carried out to adjoining corridors and surrounding spaces. The scheme required a robust flooring solution capable of withstanding heavy footfall while maintaining strict hygiene and safety standards, all within a live hospital setting where disruption had to be kept to an absolute minimum.

Working in close coordination with hospital staff, the installation areas were fully sectioned off from public access with Midlands Flooring implementing strict dust control and health and safety procedures throughout.

An initial assessment of the existing substrate revealed high relative humidity levels of around 90% RH. To address this, the team utilised UltraFloor Suppress IT to treat and stabilise the subfloor, ensuring it was suitable for subsequent works.

UltraFloor Suppress IT is a ready-to-use, single component, rapid-drying moisture vapour suppressant designed to control residual construction moisture in subfloors. Applied in two coats, this solvent-free primer membrane provides up to 95% relative humidity protection, enabling the earlier installation of floor coverings and helping to keep projects on schedule.

It’s easy-to-use formulation eliminates the need for priming, while its pigmented finish ensures accurate coverage and application control.

Following preparation and intensive vacuuming to remove dust, the floor was primed for levelling. UltraFloor Level IT Two was then applied by trowel at a 3mm depth, creating a smooth, stable base for the final Polyflor and Tarkett floor finishes.

What’s more, because Level IT Two is available as a two-component system, it takes the guesswork out of mixing, reducing site errors and guaranteeing a perfect application every time.

The project was delivered by Midlands Flooring on behalf of Russells Hall Hospital, with careful planning ensuring the hospital remained fully operational throughout the works.
