UltraTile Case Study: Domestic kitchen and lounge transformation

Project Overview

This domestic project involved the refurbishment of a downstairs kitchen and lounge within a residential property, covering a total area of 35sqm. The works were completed by Callum Barker Tiling over a seven-day period, following a thorough assessment of the existing substrate and moisture conditions.

The Challenge

During the initial site visit, it was identified that the property had experienced flooding approximately two years prior. Given this history, there were concerns around residual moisture within the substrate. To ensure a robust and long-lasting installation, Callum left a hygrometer on site for 72 hours to accurately assess humidity and moisture levels before proceeding.

Once the readings were reviewed, Callum Barker Tiling contacted UltraTile’s Technical team to discuss the most appropriate solution. Based on the findings, a “DPM sandwich” system was recommended to manage moisture effectively while providing a sound base for tiling.

The Solution

The first stage involved smoothing the existing substrate using ProLevel Ultimate floor leveller, creating a uniform surface to support the damp proof membrane application. Once cured, UltraFloor DPM damp proof membrane was applied using a V2 trowel and roller to ensure full and consistent coverage.

After allowing sufficient time for the DPM to cure and set, a neat coat of UltraFloor Prime IT Multi-surface Primer was applied. This step was crucial to ensure optimal adhesion for the second application of ProLevel Ultimate, which completed the “sandwich” system.

Following a two-hour curing period, the tiling process commenced. Tiles were fixed using UltraTile ProFlex SPES standard set flexible tile adhesive, offering enhanced flexibility and performance. Grouting was completed with UltraTile ProGrout Flexible in black, with ProClean Grout Aid used to achieve a clean, professional finish.

The Result

The completed installation delivered a durable, moisture-protected tiled floor across both the kitchen and lounge areas. By following expert technical guidance and using a fully compatible UltraTile system, the project achieved a high-quality finish with confidence.

On using UltraTile, Callum Barker shared: “UltraTile are the only materials I use as I know they are above the rest. The support you also get from UltraTile is world-class.”
