Before applying ProAqua Shield tanking kit to your bathroom, wet room or shower, surface preparation is vital to ensure the area is free of contaminants and deliver maximum adhesion.

Ensure all areas are clean, dry and free from dust or any other contaminating barriers. Remove any flaking or peeling layers. Background surfaces must be free from movement.

If applying to skim plaster:
Ensure the plastered surface is fully cured and dust free, 14-28 days depending on temperature (with >0.5% moisture) prior to application.

If applying to plasterboard:
Ensure the boards are firmly fixed in place, securing any areas of deflection.

If applying to concrete or anhydrite-type floors:
Ensure the surface is fully cured and dust-free with readings less than 75% humidity. All surface laitance must be removed prior to application.

Note:
If using ProAqua Shield in conjunction with ProDeck, priming will be required. Please review the installation instructions accordingly.

Moisture-sensitive backgrounds should be protected from moisture ingress from behind.

Applying ProAqua is simple, whether you’re using it as a bathroom tanking kit, wet room tanking kit or shower tanking kit.

ProAqua Shield should be applied using a brush or short-pile roller to give a continuous thin layer of product, at least 0.8mm thick.

Drying time will be extended depending on the thickness applied, porosity of background and temperature, if less than 20°C.

Follow these steps to apply:

Step 1:
Apply a coating of our wet room tanking kit to the junctions between wall-to-floor and wall-to-wall corners, using a paintbrush at a coverage of 1.1kg/sqm.

Step 2:
Bed a strip of membrane tape into the coating while still wet to strengthen and reinforce the junction points (adjoining boards). Membrane tape can also be used to reinforce cracks, pipe entries and screw fixings.

Step 3:
When dry (after 30 minutes), apply one uniform coat over the complete wall and floor area – including reinforced areas – in a continuous layer at a coverage of 1.1kg/sqm, using a paint brush or roller as previous. Allow 90 minutes’ drying time before commencing tiling.

Note: The use of dispersion adhesives may significantly extend drying times or prevent complete drying of the dispersion adhesive, depending on the tile type used.

The drying period for UltraTile ProAqua Shield will be affected by extremes in temperature.

High temperature site conditions will increase the speed of drying, while low temperatures will reduce the speed of drying. It is therefore good practice to consider site conditions and storage of materials as essential factors in planning your bathroom or shower tanking kit installations.

UltraTile would always advise that fitting and tiling installers follow the guidelines for installations and tiling, as laid down in BS EN 5385.

It is essential that expansion joints are built into the design of the tiling installation, in order to prevent tension build-up. This is a common occurrence which can result in tiles de-bonding.

In flooring situations there needs to be sufficient fall to ensure the water will drain freely from the floor surface.

How many coats of shower tanking kit do I need to apply?

ProAqua Shield is formulated so that, when applying as a shower tanking kit, a single coat is enough to waterproof your shower.

Do wet rooms require more coats of the wet room tanking kit?

You might think that wet room tanking kit applications would require an additional coat. However, a single coat of ProAqua is enough to waterproof your wet room.

Do you need to tank a shower tray?

While tanking a shower tray is not as essential as with a wet room or tiled floor in swimming pool or bathroom applications, it is still strongly recommended to tank your shower tray, in order to ensure proper waterproof installation.

Is tanking a legal requirement?

While it is not a legal requirement to tank a bathroom, it is a building regulations requirement. You may find your home insurance is not valid if there is water damage and the affected area hasn’t been tanked.

“I would recommend this over any adhesive. Floor was ready to grout the same day, instead of having to wait 24 hours.”
